Overview
Let us lead you to the heart of The Mournes as we trace the fascinating story of Granite.
We will show you the remains of smithies, exposed mountain side shelters and hear the story of how Mournes people subsisted for centuries harvesting one of the only crops available to them, the stone itself.
Our guides will point out what appears natural all around you but is in fact evidence of that ancient bygone era.
We’ll visit a jewel corrie lake, nestled among the high mountains all around. Mythical stories of past warriors are told about these hills and if you close your eyes for just a few seconds and imagine ….. !
You will see the long abandoned and tumbled stone cottage ruins, learn about the people who lived there and see with your own eyes their small plots of land, the famine fields that were never harvested.
Note: Depending on the group and conditions we have the option of extending this walk to climb Doan, the mountain fortress.
