Yes you need a certain level of fitness, but&nbsp;the reward is&nbsp;more than&nbsp;worth&nbsp;it. The&nbsp;lofty mountain dominates the skyline and towers over&nbsp;Dundrum bay and&nbsp;all other surrounding peaks.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On a clear day there are&nbsp;stunning vistas&nbsp;as far as Dublin Bay in one direction and Belfast lough in the other. We will share with you the story of The Mourne wall and the men who built it.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"637\" src=\"https:\/\/01.wibble.space\/mountainwaysireland-com\/2019\/10\/P1070439-min-e1574164572561-1024x637.jpg\" alt=\"Hikers descending mountain to sea\" class=\"wp-image-1563\" srcset=\"https:\/\/01.wibble.space\/mountainwaysireland-com\/2019\/10\/P1070439-min-e1574164572561-1024x637.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/01.wibble.space\/mountainwaysireland-com\/2019\/10\/P1070439-min-e1574164572561-300x187.jpg 300w, https:\/\/01.wibble.space\/mountainwaysireland-com\/2019\/10\/P1070439-min-e1574164572561-768x478.jpg 768w, https:\/\/01.wibble.space\/mountainwaysireland-com\/2019\/10\/P1070439-min-e1574164572561-50x31.jpg 50w, https:\/\/01.wibble.space\/mountainwaysireland-com\/2019\/10\/P1070439-min-e1574164572561.jpg 1100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>Newcastle far below<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What to expect as you climb Slieve Donard<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>For the first few kilometres, we climb alongside the&nbsp;mighty&nbsp;Glen River as it cascades over&nbsp;water polished&nbsp;Granite,&nbsp;tumbles through ancient&nbsp;Silurian&nbsp;greywacke and under old bridges buried deep in the forest<\/li><li>&nbsp;The  river reduces to a trickle  as we gradually reach  its source high in the mountain passes<\/li><li>A little further on we eventually&nbsp;reach the saddle between&nbsp;Slieve&nbsp;Comedagh&nbsp;on our right&nbsp;and&nbsp;Slieve&nbsp;Donard on our left.&nbsp;<\/li><li>This is our first&nbsp;contact with the mighty Mourne Wall&nbsp;which&nbsp;dances and weaves&nbsp;into the distance over 15 summits for&nbsp;a distance of 22&nbsp;miles.&nbsp;<\/li><li> Our tour guides will tell you how children as young as 13&nbsp;helped create this&nbsp;monumental structure&nbsp;over 100 years ago. <\/li><li>Finally as &nbsp;you step over the stile here,&nbsp;the view that opens up in front is&nbsp;truly&nbsp;breath-taking. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>We haven\u2019t even reached the top yet!<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We can take a break here at the stile and just appreciate the 360 panorama before turning left to follow the shelter of the wall as it leads us upwards on the final stretch towards the summit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"629\" src=\"https:\/\/01.wibble.space\/mountainwaysireland-com\/2019\/10\/P1070429-e1574192230661-1024x629.jpg\" alt=\"Group climbing Mountain along wall\" class=\"wp-image-1562\" srcset=\"https:\/\/01.wibble.space\/mountainwaysireland-com\/2019\/10\/P1070429-e1574192230661-1024x629.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/01.wibble.space\/mountainwaysireland-com\/2019\/10\/P1070429-e1574192230661-300x184.jpg 300w, https:\/\/01.wibble.space\/mountainwaysireland-com\/2019\/10\/P1070429-e1574192230661-768x472.jpg 768w, https:\/\/01.wibble.space\/mountainwaysireland-com\/2019\/10\/P1070429-e1574192230661-50x31.jpg 50w, https:\/\/01.wibble.space\/mountainwaysireland-com\/2019\/10\/P1070429-e1574192230661.jpg 1110w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>The Mourne Wall as it reaches up towards Slieve Donard<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>History of Slieve Donard&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Countless generations have been drawn here and in fact&nbsp;it once had&nbsp;two ancient&nbsp;burial cairns&nbsp;on top.&nbsp;As a direct consequence of  ordnance survey engineers using the high points for triangulation and later interventions,there are now only scant remains of what our forefathers built.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Greater cairn which now stands alongside the&nbsp;Mourne wall shelter tower was&nbsp;thought to have been a&nbsp;Neolithic&nbsp;passage tomb.Our ancestors built this over 5000 years ago.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Similarly, a couple of hundred metres to the North&nbsp;East is the lesser &nbsp;multiple cist cairn&nbsp;from&nbsp;the&nbsp;Bronze age&nbsp;period, around 1000&nbsp;later.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Interestingly this is a replication of&nbsp;the two better preserved megalithic monuments on the Summit of County Armagh\u2019s highest&nbsp;mountain,&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mountainwaysireland.com\/guided-hikes\/slieve-gullion\/\" target=\"_blank\">Slieve Gullion<\/a>.&nbsp;On a good day we can see across to Gullion.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Slieve Donard&#8217;s Changing Names<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The mountain&nbsp;too&nbsp;has changed its name over the millennia.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Deep in Irelands past it was once known as&nbsp;Beann&nbsp;Boirche, and Sliabh&nbsp;Slangha.&nbsp;  However, Like many high places in&nbsp;Ireland,&nbsp;it was&nbsp;later&nbsp;Christianized and named after Saint&nbsp;Domhangart, Saint Donard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Things to do and see at the end of your hike<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Why not plan a few more things to do locally?
